On 12 November, the Department of Foundational Mathematics at the School of Mathematics and Physics, Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University, held a sharing and Q&A session for Year One students enrolled in MTH013, MTH019, and MTH029. The event aimed to enhance students’ understanding of calculus, support their academic transition, and strengthen communication between teachers and students.

The session was chaired by Dr Feiyan Chen, Module Leader of MTH019. Dr Rui Zhang, Head of the Department of Foundational Mathematics, delivered the opening remarks, extending a warm welcome to all participants. She expressed appreciation for the strong cooperation between teachers and students and introduced the School of Mathematics and Physics as well as the Department of Foundational Mathematics. Dr Zhang also shared valuable advice on transitioning from high school to university-level learning.

During the main discussion, Dr Kun Zhang (Module Leader of MTH029), Dr Fei Jie (Module Leader of MTH013), and other lecturers presented their teaching philosophies. They highlighted that learning calculus is not only about mathematical techniques but also about developing critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Students were encouraged to actively read the textbook, participate in class discussions, and make use of office hours for academic support.

Several recipients of last year’s Academic Excellence Award were invited to share their learning experience, offering practical insights to the current cohort.

In the Q&A session, teachers and students discussed course design, study strategies, and ways to balance academic planning with future career development. The lecturers advised students to consider long-term goals rather than focusing solely on short-term grades when selecting courses.

The session featured an engaging and relaxed atmosphere. The event received highly positive feedback from students, many of whom said that direct dialogue with their lecturers helped clarify their learning objectives and better understand course expectations.
